An earlier treatment for a group of people who acquired the bacteria in a hospital could also offer potential treatment for other patients. The group had not acquired bacteria in the past, and hospital was only place they had ever been at, the study authors said. But bacteria had already spread in other people the community, and so researchers looked for antibiotic compounds that might prevent the spread of bugs, according to the study. They searched for compounds produced by the bacterium E. coli. These are produced in large quantities by E. coli that have consumed protein or milk contaminated with the bacteria's spores and bacteria.
The researchers identified compounds from bacteria that inhibit those compounds. The compounds reduced growth of E. coli by about 98 percent, the results showed.
"I think they've definitely done a very nice job," said Dr. John V. Goss, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Yale. (He was not involved in the study.)
The researchers are still looking for the specific compounds that they can target would inhibit the growth of other bacteria that were already in the community of people with bacteria, he said.
